Room 529, Monday Morning (Before Classes)

Tahiri had been expecting this call for a while now; she just hadn't expected it to come now, and she supposed the timing could've been worse. It could've been better, granted, but she'd sort of given up on hoping for these things to ever happen at a good time.

Times like this, she wished packing involved more than just making sure she had her comlink, blaster, and lightsaber and throwing a couple of spare sets of clothing (including a certain too-big-for-her shirt) into a bag along with her datapad and oh yeah, those stupid boots. Which she'd need more than usual on this trip, she knew. She wasn't sure how ready she'd be for all this, although out of everything she was expecting, it was the prospect of seeing Jacen that had her the most worried, so it would've been nice to have to concentrate more on packing. Traveling light had its downsides.

It wasn't just for the sake of keeping herself busy between now and the time her shuttle arrived that she left messages for a few people, of course, although she felt bad about giving people more to worry about on the heels of the past week.

So. Packing as slowly as possible, and trying to stay calm. Force, she hoped she was ready for this, but seriously, she was sixteen years old and needed boots just to reach the foot yokes in an X-Wing, and who'd thought it was a good idea to give her a kriffing squadron, anyway?

Hurley looked over from where he was making his bed.

"...dude, what?" he said.

Tahiri folded up a set of robes and crammed them into her backpack. "That's the first time you've ever actually overheard, isn't it?"

Hurley nodded. "I guess I'm extra alert these days."

"Yeah," Tahiri said vaguely, too preoccupied to ask why. "Want to take bets on how long I'll end up being gone?"

"Three days?" Hurley said, trying to sound hopeful.

"Optimistic." Tahiri huffed a voiceless laugh, pulled the robes out, folded them again, and repacked them -- even though she wasn't anywhere near running out of room for the amount of stuff she was bringing. "That'd be nice, but I'm not counting on it."

"Yeah, well... things are looking pretty good, from where I am," Hurley said.

"Yay," Tahiri said without much enthusiasm. No, really, she was looking forward to this trip. Really.

Hurley chewed his lip a second. "You're probably headed out right away, huh?"

Tahiri glanced down at her backpack, then over at him. "No, I'm just so excited about this I can't wait to pack."

"I was just wondering if you were gonna be gone by the time I was done with class," Hurley said. "If we might, like... go get cupcakes or something before you go."

"It's pretty soon," Tahiri said slowly, "but maybe --"

Cupcakes did sound good. And then she thought about the starfighter tactics she'd been studying for days on end, and g-forces, and not being in a simulator, and her stomach lurched.

"-- maybe that won't be a good idea," she concluded, looking a little queasy.

Hurley pulled a face. "Oh, okay," he said. "Ummm... guess I better just give you a hug for the road... space. Space road."

She managed a nervous laugh, now. "I could definitely use one, yeah. This is not going to be fun."

Hurley went over to give a big, loving roomie hug.

"Maybe it'll be short," he offered.

Tahiri was just going to hang on for a while in that clinging, stronger than she looked kind of way. "Maybe. But I have a hard time believing in things being easy any more. I've never done anything like this."

"Well, that just means you'll get more awesome by doing it," Hurley said, in his special reasoning sort of way.

Oh, sure. If she got back. Which Tahiri was kind of hoping she did.

"We'll find out when I get back, right?"

"Right," Hurley said. "I'll keep the room clean and stuff."

"Astral." Really, Tahiri, some enthusiasm might be in order here.

"...okay, now I'm gonna be worried the whole time you're gone," Hurley said.

Hey, it was either neutral or complete freakout. It had already been a bad last week; Tahiri figured neutral was the better option.

"You mean you weren't last time?"

Also, vague attempts at jokes. But that was habit.

"Okay, maybe I was," Hurley said, smirking a little. "But I totally have faith in you."

"Thanks, Hurley," she said quietly, and let out a tiny laugh. Oh, don't think she didn't suspect something was seriously wrong with her in yet another alternate version of reality. If nothing else, Raven's reaction had been a Concern. "Let's hope whatever pilots they give me will, too . . ."

"Yeah," Hurley said. "Here's hoping for good pilots."

Tahiri smiled slightly. "At least one of us thinks this isn't too weird."

"After the weekend? I would happily be turned into a bunny rabbit and I would think it wasn't too weird," Hurley said.

"Let's not talk about that right now. I'm only about to get promoted to Knight and then get ready to fight in a huge campaign, and I'm supposed to be in charge of people and . . ." Tahiri stopped for breath before she started to hyperventilate.

"And you're gonna do awesome," Hurley said. "Honest."

"I just want to do my job," she said, doing her best not to look as nervous as she was.

Hurley nodded. "I better get going," he said. "I'll see you later, okay?"
