Room 529, Friday Afternoon

This was a conversation she'd been putting off for a while, but -- especially given that yesterday had been one of the bad days -- really needed to be had, so Tahiri had handwavily called a couple of people and then gone to see about getting some snacks. Because snacks always made awkward situations slightly less so, right?

There was . . . well, okay, there was a box of cookies, one of those tins with all the different-shaped butter cookies that all tasted the same except some of them had sugar crystals on them. And a couple of pints of ice cream. That part was a given, really.

A few weeks to mull over the idea that Riina had slipped out and done something to help someone hadn't made it any less weird; maybe knowing more about that would change things. Not to mention she did owe Tara an explanation for the whole "hi, I went crazy and kind of scary on you and then didn't remember any of it" thing.

. . . maybe she should have gotten more ice cream.

Tahiri relaxed visibly now, squeezing Ben's hand. "Okay. Okay, good. I wouldn't hurt you, I promise, and I'm not going to let her. And Tara," she added, her expression uncertain but sympathetic, "I'm really sorry."

"There's, um, really nothing to be sorry for," Tara said, reaching over to pat Tahiri on the shoulder, with an expression on her face that was trying hard to be a smile. "I promise."

Ben leaned in a little more against Tahiri. "See, nothing to worry about."

"Yeah.". Tahiri smiled shakily. "Thanks, Tara. If things go right it won't be a problem soon."

Wow. Way to sound reassuring there, Tahiri.

"Oh. Good." Then Tara's curiosity caught up to her. "... what if things don't go right?"

Ben winced just slightly.

Tahiri flinched, then hoped it hadn't been obvious. "Then we have a real problem. But it won't go wrong."

She wasn't half as unsure as she'd been about this an hour ago. When had she turned into the one who was less worried?

Tara hesitated before speaking again. The flinching had her worried, but she'd try not to show it. "If there's ever anything I can do -- let me know? I k-kind of owe her one."

"This was really good news," Ben assured her with a tiny smile. "Thank you."
