She'd gotten the invitation, yes, and Tahiri would have loved to have gone to the alumni mixer, except that she had her hands full.

Not literally at the moment, though they had been earlier. Not figuratively at the moment, either; she thought she'd managed to soothe the ruffled feathers (so to speak) of the villagers involved in today's latest argument. There hadn't been bloodshed; she counted it as a win.

Also counting as a win was the chance to get away, find a quiet spot in the jungle, and just relax for a few minutes.

That's one of the things I miss about Fandom. Even the ridiculous things here at home are a little harder to gloss over. Do you have any idea how many times I've wished I could just tell myself whatever crazy situation I'm in will probably just go away on its own in a couple of days? No, you probably know the feeling exactly.

Ben waited until he was back from lunch with Ender before laying down on his bed with a little sigh (sleeping in the forest without even a bedroll was dumb) and picked up his comlink.

He smiled at the first number still in the speed-dial, and punched it.

Tahiri had to hear about this.

Well, mostly Jaina's part. Benina would never be spoken of again.

Tahiri glanced at her comlink and grinned as she thumbed it to pick up the call.

"Hi, Ben. Tell me you got pictures of Jaina."

"Coming down the aisle or reacting with grief to the death of her husband, Tony's dad?" Ben asked, laughing.

"Tony's dad?" Tahiri blurted out, barely remembering to keep her voice down. "She didn't mention that part, just him dropping dead at the altar. She was giving me grief about not being there."

That was probably either a good thing, or a sad, sad missed opportunity for extra surreality.

"You would have made a lovely bridesmaid," Ben snickered. "Like Zayne did."

"Zayne? You're just making this up now, aren't you?" Tahiri demanded, then thought better of it. "No, wait. It's too ridiculous for you to make it up, which is saying something, because I've heard some of the things you've made up."

"Thank you, I think?" Ben replied. "This weekend was crazy, even by our normal standards of crazy. Granddad had started a coffee cartel and the whole thing ended with an earthquake and volcano."

". . . I am so incredibly sorry I missed this," Tahiri sighed. "You'd think things would calm down enough around here just long enough for me to visit."

"Maybe by Homecoming?" Ben asked hopefully. "Or maybe you could be my visitor for Parents Weekend. I think Dad might be...busy."

Or Ben might still be really pissed at him.

"I promised Jaina I'd do my best to make it for Homecoming," Tahiri assured him, "and I intend to keep that promise."

A beat.

"But if we all turn five that weekend, it's her fault. She brought it up."
