She'd promised to try and make it back to Fandom at some point soon, but the way she was caught up in a particularly tangled set of negotiations at the moment Tahiri wasn't sure if that was going to happen. And it wasn't even as if it was some kind of huge, civilization-endangering crisis, just a thousand tiny details that neither side seemed to be willing to concede.

It was hard to be too frustrated, though, when a good number of those points of conflict were kind of funny if you were Tahiri.

Which was why she was relaxing in what amounted to the living room of her little cliff dwelling, reviewing notes on her datapad and chuckling softly.

Ender had avoided speaking to Tahiri for a while for reasons that were - he could admit that - both personal and somewhat irrational.

He was tired of it. He was still interested in her progress, nothing else had changed, and so he finally gave in and rang her number.

"Jedi Veila here. Hi, Ender," Tahiri said lightly when she picked up the call. "How are things doing back in Fandom?"

[OOC: Ugh, will set the comment pages properly on this as soon as I get a chance.]

"Picking back up now that the new semester has begun," Ender said, with a tiny smile. "Hello, Tahiri. Your end of the fence is probably more exciting."

"Jaina reminded me it was that time again. I tend to lose track otherwise," Tahiri admitted. "And that depends on your definition of exciting; did you realize the exact number of steps from the center of a settlement to the nearest water source can be a matter for days of intensive debate?"

Ender raised his eyebrows. "I don't know," he said. "Is it about the placement of that water source, the difference in species, or the actual data?"

"Well, the vast difference in species' stride length is a factor," Tahiri replied. "Evidently it's a matter of cultural significance to a couple of different parties, though."

"Howso?" Ender asked.

This was interesting. Don't you judge him.

Oh sure, make me have to elaborate on the things I randomly make up. "Well." Tahiri took a breath and went on at some fast-paced length about the ritual importance of water to one group of refugees (and how she sympathized, having grown up on Tatooine).

"Which is a little bit of a problem when we've got another group from a place that flooded a lot and has an almost superstitious fear of being too close," she concluded."

And this is why we don't give Ender these kind of ideas. He chuckled. "So it's a matter of finding a water hole that makes for a decent compromise," he said. "Not too close, not too far..."

Ben knew he had to rip off the bacta patch at some point and tell Tahiri about the new arrival on the island.

He took a deep breath, then pushed her code into the comlink and waited for her to pick up.

Tahiri reached for her comlink and clicked it on. "Jedi Veila," she said a little more formally this time. It was a comlink thing.

"Hello, Jedi Veila," Ben said, voice a little teasing. "Jedi Skywalker here."

"Boy, what do I owe the honor to today?" Tahiri teased right back. "Now that I've heard from both representatives of your room."

Sure, it was amusing now.

"It's Call Someone In Another Galaxy Day," Ben made up. "Ender cheated by picking you."

[weetuskenraider]

"Well, technically he is sort of an in-law now," Tahiri pointed out, "so by some local standards you could argue it wasn't cheating at all."

Teasing Ben was always fun.

"How are things back there?"

Ben's cheeks went a little pink. "We had our new crop of students arrive," he began. "Last ones before I graduate."

Tahiri would actually bet on him blushing there, and allowed herself a faint smirk. "Anyone interesting in the bunch this time around?"

By now, Jaina had had a couple days to process yesterday's (somewhere) news, and so it probably shouldn't be a total shock that there'd be a call to Tahiri. She sort of assumed that news would have made it back to her by now. What timing!

Shhh, she was the one person Jaina knew who'd really understand. Calls were necessary.

So Tahiri sounded a little less chipper than she had the previous two times she'd answered calls, but she managed to try and sound . . . neutral, at least.

"Jedi Veila here."

[solo_sword]

"Oh, so the rest of us just stick with our last names, but you just have to be different," Jaina greeted her.

"I think it's expected of me by now, so who am I not to live up to that?" Tahiri replied. "Boy, am I ever the popular one today, it seems like."

[solo_sword]

"Is it one of those days where I'm about the thirtieth person to call?" Yes, betting at least one of those was Anakin-related.

"Sixth, actually, but only the third from Fandom, so you still get to be a little special," Tahiri assured her. "I'm glad you did, actually."

[solo_sword]

"Any particular reason, or just glad to hear my voice?" she checked.

[weetuskenraider]

"I wish I could say it was the second option," Tahiri replied, and because it was Jaina she dropped the pretense of sounding neutral. "Have you had any, um . . . news from Fandom lately?"
